The U-Boat War Badge was authorized in 1939 for submariners who took part in marine battle operations. In fact it was modification of the award badge that had been bestowed since 1918. The award and its essence being reconsidered by Casberg featured the image of a submarine boat framed by a laurel leaves wreath. The imperial crown that used to decorate the top of the badge was replaced by the national eagle clutching the swastika.
